Superior Yoga

Working English translation of the Tamil teaching — for review.

Superior Yoga refers to the higher, deeper states of yoga. It not only improves the health of the body; through practices such as breath control, deep meditation and samadhi, it increases the mastery of the mind and helps one attain self-knowledge and spiritual progress.

This yoga has many methods, the chief among them being Kundalini Yoga, Raja Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and Siddhar Yoga. Kundalini Yoga focuses on awakening the Kundalini energy that lies dormant at the base of the body. Raja Yoga helps one attain spiritual progress through meditation and control of the mind, and Ashtanga Yoga works on the basis of Patanjali’s eight limbs. Siddhar Yoga, given by the Tamil Siddhas, is a practice that unites body, mind and soul.

In the Tamil tradition, yoga was regarded not only as a way to spiritual growth but as an instrument for attaining the whole purpose of life. Known as Siddhar Yoga and as the science of yoga, these practices help one feel the divine energy through breath control and cultivate self-restraint through meditation. The final aim of Superior Yoga is to feel oneself and the universal power as one, and to attain peace of mind.
